Today we published our 2024 Annual Report, sharing our achievements from last year and renewing our commitment to work in collaboration with you to shape an equitable, open, and transparent scholarly evaluation landscape.

We built our annual strategic approach to advance our mission around three key objectives:

  1. Strengthen PREreview's financial position and governance
  2. Grow the number of reviews published through PREreview.org
  3. Increase global engagement with PREreview platform and training

Find out how we made great progress around all these three objectives:

Reflecting more on 2024

2024 stood out as another transformative year for us, defined by two pivotal elements: expansion and introspection.

Expansion of our team—we welcomed two new members to our core team, Chris Wilkinson, as the new Head of Technology, and Grace Park, as the new Communications and Engagement Officer, and two new members of our Advisory Committee, Aurelia Munene and Christopher Steven Marcum.

Expansion of our community—we celebrated 1000 PREreview published, 3000 PREreviewers registered, and the creation of over 30 PREreview Clubs for collaborative peer review!

Expansion of our impact—we graduated and celebrated our first cohort of 19 PREreview Champions who helped us train more than 200 community members in socially-conscious peer review.

With growth comes the need for introspection to make sure that as PREreview increases in staffing and programming, we also increase our impact in alignment with our mission. At PREreview, we take pride in our commitment to expanding organically—growing at the speed of trust – and ensuring that everything we do, and how we do it, is guided by our values.

Last fall, we began a thorough evaluation of our organization, exploring alternative structures, refining internal processes, and reexamining cultural norms to ensure they align more closely with our principles. We also took the opportunity to engage the entire team in reflecting on our core values.

This process is not just about looking inward; it’s about ensuring our foundation remains strong as we continue to grow and make a meaningful impact in our community. We are extremely grateful for the support we are receiving from Ananda Valenzuela and Dr. Antoinette Foster who are guiding us through this work, and we look forward to sharing more about its outcomes with you all in the months ahead.

An assessment of 2024 would not be authentic if we did not also recognize that 2024, at least at first, has also been a year of uncertainty for us.

Last January, with the end of a 2-year grant period fast approaching and not enough funding secured to continue our work through the fall, our team was balancing between planning for the maintenance of our services and resources such that they would continue without a full-team support, and planning for the great features, programs, and resources we were all so excited about bringing to our community. It wasn’t until May that the organization secured a 3-year grant to support our work and our community (read more about the funding here).

"The first few months of last year have been undeniably challenging, but not once did I believe it was the end of PREreview. The need for change in how we disseminate and evaluate knowledge has never been clearer to such a broad range of interest holders, and our impact has never felt more tangible. I am deeply grateful for the support we have received and acutely aware of the need for a more sustainable strategy—one that enables our community to continue to shape transformative change without the threats of commercialization and exploitation.” —Daniela Saderi, PREreview Executive Director and Co-founder

Sneak Peek into 2025

In 2025, we will continue enhancing support for our existing community while exploring the best ways to engage new groups and address emerging research outputs.

For instance, we are thrilled about the opportunity to partner with patient and patient-advocate organizations to explore how we can better include expert practitioners and individuals with lived experience in the open preprint review process.

We’re also incredibly excited to move our localization and translation work ahead, starting with Latin American Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese. We are thankful to collaborate with Noemi Gonzalez-Rocha and the Language Justice Team on this important chapter of our community engagement.

Additionally, we are committed to strengthening the resilience and sustainability of our work and resources. This includes implementing changes to transition to a new organizational structure that fosters the growth of PREreview as a more inclusive, leaderful, and joyful organization. We are also excited to launch our long-anticipated organizational membership model, which has been in development over the past few months. More on our strategic approach to the next three years coming soon!

We express our profound gratitude to all those who have actively participated in, contributed to, and engaged with our initiatives throughout this year. Your involvement has been instrumental in shaping and advancing our mission and we look forward to renewing our partnership with you in the future!
