At PREreview, we work to support and empower systematically disadvantaged researchers to help them find a voice, train, and engage in open, equitable, collaborative peer review. As such, we are excited to announce applications are open for our second year of the PREreview Champions Program!
What is the PREreview Champions Program?
The Champions Program aims to empower PREreview community members with the knowledge, skills, and resources to train and engage others to participate in the open peer review of preprints.
This year, our annual cohort program will be running from March to September 2025. Champions will be selected via an application process with regard to their experience with and knowledge of PREreview, preprint peer review, and the open scholarship space generally, as well as their plans on how to take this work forward to serve researchers within their communities. Champions will then participate in collaborative training sessions and have opportunities to work together, sharing experiences and knowledge with one another and with their communities according to their interests, skills, and the time they feel they can contribute. Follow-on engagement activities Champions may undertake include but are not limited to:
- Translating PREreview materials and resources into other languages
- Running an Open Reviewers training either online or in-person
- Mentoring three or more fellow researchers through how to review a preprint, with the reviews published on PREreview.org
- Organizing and facilitating one or more Live Reviews
- Creating and leading a new PREreview Club
- Organizing and/or speaking about PREreview at an in-person or virtual event
- Organizing a panel discussion about open preprint review
- Facilitating a collaboration between PREreview with another like-minded program or organization
- Helping us to run a global PREreview day where reviewers around the world get together to review preprints

What Champions can expect from PREreview
We want to provide our Champions with all the skills and resources they need to succeed. As such, our Champions can expect the following from us:
- $500 USD honorarium provided upon completion of the training and at least one engagement activity (please note that bank payments may not be possible in some countries; payments may instead be in the form of a gift voucher, please contact us if you have any concerns)
- PREreview Open Reviewers Training, including a certification and digital badge of attendance
- A copy of all workshop materials licensed CC BY 4.0, including workshop information, slides, handouts, and templates
- Recognition on the PREreview website
- Help with content for presentations, training, Live Reviews, and written articles
- Personal PREreview Champion 2025 badge for use on email, website, and profile on the PREreview Slack Community
- Being included in a supportive community of individuals who share your vision for a more open and equitable scholarly communication landscape
- And more!

About the application process
Applications will be reviewed by four members of the PREreview team: Daniela Saderi (Co-Founder and Director), Vanessa Fairhurst (Head of Community), Chad Sansing (Head of Product), and Grace Park (Communications and Engagement Officer), working to center and foster diverse representation across our communities (EDIA Statement). All identifiable information will be permanently deleted after the selection process has been completed.
