Our Mission
PREreview’s mission is to bring greater openness and equity to research peer review by empowering all researchers and experts to participate in reviewing preprints and other research outputs with the tools and community support they need to thrive.
Our Vision
We envision a scholarly ecosystem rooted in trust, care, and collective wisdom—where knowledge flows freely, not as a commodity to be owned, but as a shared inheritance to be nurtured. In this world, peer review and publishing are not gatekeeping mechanisms, but spaces of belonging that honor the truths of those long excluded and thrive through openness, relationship, and shared purpose.
The ultimate transformation we seek is a world where knowledge is no longer controlled by the few, but held in trust by the many—a scholarly ecosystem rooted in care, where power is shared, truth is co-created, and every voice is honored as essential to our collective understanding of the world.
Our Grounding Truths
Knowledge is a shared inheritance.
Scholarship is not the privilege of the few—it is a collective, living force, shaped by communities in relationship with one another. Knowledge grows through openness, mutual learning, and trust in the wisdom of many.
Power must be shared for knowledge to be shared.
The current system of scholarly publishing excludes by design, upholding hierarchies that silence many and center a narrow vision of legitimacy. Transformation begins when we not only shift who has access, but reimagine who holds authority, whose knowledge counts, and who benefits from the systems we create.
Culture and inclusion are inseparable.
Beyond rules and policies, systems are shaped by the stories we tell and the values we uphold. Ideas about prestige, authority, and value have been weaponized to exclude. We believe in a new culture of scholarship—one rooted in humility, respect, and the honoring of all ways of knowing.
We are here to build, not just to dismantle.
Transformation is not simply the undoing of harm—it is the creation of something better. A scholarly world built on equity, care, shared power, and love is not only possible—it is already taking root in the spaces where people come together with purpose and imagination.
Openness without voice is not justice.
We believe in openness not just as transparency, but as trust. Participation must be meaningful, grounded in relationships, and shaped by those who have been excluded for too long. To open knowledge is to invite others in, not just to witness—but to lead.
Change lives in community.
Lasting transformation doesn’t come from isolated action. It grows from solidarity—from networks of scholars, activists, communities, and institutions working together in trust. Collective care and shared purpose are the foundation of the future we are building.
What We Do
PREreview exists as a response to the flawed ways research is traditionally evaluated. Behind closed doors, a small number of unpaid reviewers—often selected through opaque and exclusionary networks—use subjective criteria to determine the fate of research articles. This process is slow, inequitable, and disproportionately disadvantages researchers from historically marginalized communities.
We work to create more open, collaborative, and equitable alternatives.
Our work centers around four interconnected pillars:
- Maintaining a free, open-source review platform that recognizes and credits reviewers (also see PREreview GitHub repository)
- Offering training and mentorship programs that support people in becoming agents of change
- Facilitating collaborative review experiences such as Live Reviews, PREreview Clubs, and community events
- Cultivating practices of accountability, reflection, and care that help us grow into a more equitable, inclusive, just, and joyful community
Across these pillars, we continuously experiment, learn, and iterate through projects, partnerships, and community engagement. We believe these sustained, community-driven efforts can compound into meaningful systems-level change.
