The PREreview Champions Program is a cohort program running for 6 months between March and September 2025, aimed at empowering exceptional community members to expand the mission of PREreview and better support systematically disadvantaged researchers around the world to engage in the peer review process.
We've learned a lot from our Champions last year, many of whom are now PREreview Experts, and we've adapted the training, processes, and resources to incorporate those learnings. This year, we received 70 applications from 26 countries, which you can see visualized in the map below. You can also read more about this yearβs program goals, expectations, and benefits in our earlier post.

What motivated our Champions to apply?
As our team read through 70 incredible applications, we were humbled by the shared commitment to fostering equity, accessibility and inclusion in scholarship:
βI want to be a PREreview Champion because I am deeply committed to fostering inclusivity, equity, and collaboration in the scholarly community."
βNow more than ever, I appreciate the importance of accessibility, transparency, and inclusion at every stage of the research life cycle. PREreview provides an invaluable platform for early-career researchers and underrepresented groups to engage with the peer review process and foster equitable representation in academia.β
Many shared their motivation to support other early-career researchers and students in particular recognizing the obstacles that academia and the peer review system pose upon them:
βI want to be a PREreview Champion because I know how intimidating the peer review process can feel, especially for early-career researchers and those from underrepresented backgrounds. Iβve been there, unsure of whether my feedback was valuable, hesitant to speak up in academic discussions. But I also know how empowering it is to gain the right skills, be part of a supportive community, and realize that my voice in research matters. I want to help others feel that confidence.β
"I am interested in becoming a PREreview Champion because I want to contribute to improving transparency and inclusiveness in the scientific review process. As someone from academia, Iβve seen many of my students struggle to understand the peer review process, share preprints, and make their research, data, and codes openly accessible.β
And others were invested in knowledge-building and -sharing:
βOpen science is more than just a philosophy; it is a transformative approach that fosters innovation and accelerates the dissemination of knowledge. The PREreview Champion program offers a unique platform to actively contribute to this movement by engaging in the peer review process, sharing expertise, and promoting equitable access to scientific discoveries.β
