We are delighted to celebrate 2024 as a year of community-led improvements on prereview.org! We’re also so excited to learn from and work with our amazing, global network of reviewers again in 2025.
2024 in review
We spent 2024 working on several user experience improvements on prereview.org. Our goal was to engage more participants more fully with open, peer preprint review through an innovative publishing platform that supports - and is supported by - other core services like hosting PREreview Clubs, training reviewers in open practices, and facilitating collaborative live reviews.
To help community members get more from PREreview and their contributions to open, peer preprint review, we:
- Added a new commenting feature to PREreviews inviting author responses and interaction between authors, reviewers, and other community members.
- Hosted community design sprints in collaboration with language justice and inclusion professionals to learn more about which parts of prereview.org our community wants to prioritize for localization and translation in 2025.
- Launched our request-a-review feature and improved the way users can filter searches prereview.org.
- Launched a new ORCID integration giving our reviewers credit for their public review activity.
Along the way, we passed many key milestones:
- PREreviewers published our 1,000th PREreview.
- prereview.org registered its 3,000th user.
- prereview.org averaged more than 4 published reviews a week.
- PREreviewers published more than 30 reviews in response to requests for review on specific preprints.
- PREreviewers published more than 75 reviews through PREreview Clubs.
With upcoming work on localization and translation into Brazilian Portuguese and Latin American Spanish, we plan to keep making more community-led improvements on prereview.org. We know this will help us to continue growing the number, impact, and interconnectedness of our reviewers, reviews, and core offerings like clubs in 2025.
Planning ahead for 2025
Next year, we’ll focus on:
- Localizing prereview.org into Portuguese and Spanish with help from language justice and inclusion professionals and community volunteers.
- Partnering with patient and patient-advocate organizations to include more expert practitioners and experts with lived experience in the open, peer preprint review process.
- Expanding the number of different kinds of early research outputs reviewable on prereview.org.
- Expanding PREreview’s presence across other servers and services in the online open peer review ecosystem.
- Improving our user experience for newcomers to PREreview and to open, peer preprint review in general.
